Carina L. Johnson is a professor of history at Pitzer College. Her research focuses on identity markers in the early modern world and experiences of war and violence in the sixteenth-century Habsburg Empire. Via histories of soldiers, refugees, and homefront communities, she explores the complex social and cultural consequences of the Holy Roman Empire’s long conflict with the Ottoman Empire.
