Carina L. Johnson is Professor of History at Pitzer College. She completed her BA in archeological studies and history at Yale University and her PhD in history at the University of California, Berkeley. Her work has been supported by grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, Fulbright Commission, and Woodrow Wilson Institute. Johnson is co-editor of Archeologies of Confession: Writing the German Reformation, 1517-2017 (Berghahn, 2017) and the author of Cultural Hierarchy in Sixteenth-Century Europe: The Ottomans and Mexicans (Cambridge, 2011). Her current research focuses on identity markers in the early modern world and experiences of war and violence in the sixteenth-century Habsburg Empire.
