Beyond Architecture: Identity and Sustainability – Fundación RIA in Galicia

How can we accommodate change and development, and encourage investment in our cities and rural areas while protecting the inherent qualities of the place? How can we protect identity and the quality of life it secures? What is the role of the architect and of architecture in addressing these issues?

In this lecture, David Chipperfield will present the work of Fundación RIA, a nonprofit organization he established in Galicia, northwest Spain. Like many rural areas across the globe, Galicia is struggling to determine a sustainable future that both defends its natural and cultural environment while harnessing its full economic potential. What started as a research project in 2016 to help the local community address the poor quality of development and issues related to planning and infrastructure has evolved into a foundation advocating for a more collaborative planning system, bringing all sectors to the table alongside local and international experts. Through a series of pilot projects, the foundation seeks to encourage a new approach to the governance and perception of rural and semi-rural areas.
