For eight years, Ben Rhodes witnessed Barack Obama’s presidency up close and personal. In his new book, The World As It Is: A Memoir of the Obama White House (Random House, 2018; German: Im Weißen Haus, 2019, Verlag C.H.Beck), the former Obama speechwriter and deputy national security advisor tells the story of an politician who started from a position of idealism, was confronted by cold realities, and still had to continue to govern. In this talk, Rhodes discusses his experiences in the Obama administration, the complex tasks it took on over two presidential terms, and his tenure as one of Barack Obama’s most trusted confidantes. Rhodes is currently co-chair of the organization National Security Action and continues to be a senior advisor to Barack Obama.
