Lan Samantha Chang discusses her forthcoming novel, “The Family Chao” (W.W. Norton, February 2022), which follows members of the Chinese diaspora and describes the experience of long-term assimilation into mainstream American culture. In her tragicomic portrayal of immigrants who have been able to profit from this culture while also experiencing trauma and alienation, Chang develops the future of a family that, she writes, “has made its ghosts in the US and is, for this reason, not quite an immigrant family any longer.”
