Sandra E. Peterson is the chairman of the American Academy in Berlin.

Peterson is an operating partner at Clayton Dubilier & Rice, an investment firm. She was Group Worldwide Chairman for Johnson & Johnson and played a leading role in transforming the world’s largest healthcare company. Until October 2018, she was responsible for the company’s Consumer and Medical Devices businesses, as well as global operating infrastructure, technology, supply-chain, quality, and health & wellness businesses. She led enterprise initiatives to spur innovation and accelerate growth and was driving Johnson & Johnson’s efforts to transform healthcare using technology and design-thinking to create breakthrough solutions for patients, consumers and providers.

Peterson was formerly Chairman & CEO of Bayer Crop Science, CEO of Bayer Medical Care and held executive leadership roles at Merck-Medco, Nabisco, Whirlpool, and McKinsey.

She holds a BA from Cornell and an MPA from Princeton. Peterson is Lead Independent Director of the Microsoft board of directors and  a board member of the Institute of Advanced Study. She was chairman of board of EcoHealth Alliance and board member of Dun & Bradstreet.  She is a founding member of Women Corporate Directors. She has appeared on Fortune magazine’s list of most powerful women numerous times and was featured on the magazine’s inaugural list of leaders changing healthcare.
