Jochen Hellbeck is Associate Professor of History at Rutgers University. A Russian specialist by background, he is particularly interested in autobiographical accounts and people’s self-understandings in historical perspective. His awards include Fulbright, Michigan Society of Fellows, Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, and Thyssen fellowships. His book Revolution on My Mind (Harvard, 2009) explores personal diaries written in the Soviet Union under Stalin, and addresses the paradox of self-expression in an overtly repressive political system.

Project Description

Letters from Stalingrad: The German and Soviet War Experience

At the American Academy, Hellbeck continued his work on a comparative study of the German and Soviet experience of the battle of Stalingrad. The project seeks to understand the competing appeals of Soviet and Nazi German ideologies through an examination of the thoughts and actions of the people who lived, fought, and died in Stalingrad, on all sides of the front.
