How do you write the biography of an island, particularly one with competing narratives about its provenance, polity, and legal status? In this talk at the Heidelberg Center for American Studies, Michael Meyer illustrates the tightrope of Taiwanese history, detailing the island’s experience before, during, and after colonial and Chinese arrivals and exploring how contemporary Taiwanese see their palimpsest home.
