ESMT Open Lecture Series

Geopolitics and the Emerging Structure of Global Supply Chains

IN COOPERATION WITH ESMT BERLIN

Extending insights from Geopolitics, Supply Chains and International Relations of East Asia, Etel Solingen will discuss the effects of the current geopolitical juncture on the emerging structure of global supply chains. Along with Covid-19, extreme weather, and other sources of supply chain snarls, geopolitical tensions have changed the world of global supply chains as we knew it. Russia’s war on Ukraine, in particular, has the potential for unleashing tectonic plate shifts in the underlying geography of global production. Solingen will examine the implications of this juncture for transatlantic relations with Martin Thümmel, deputy director general for East Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific at the Federal Foreign Office.

Etel Solingen is Distinguished Professor and Thomas and Elizabeth Tierney Chair in Peace and Conflict at the University of California Irvine. She received the National Academy of Sciences William and Katherine Estes Award for advancing our understanding of the risk of nuclear war. She was President of the International Studies Association and was honored with its Distinguished Scholar award in International Security, a MacArthur Foundation Peace and International Cooperation award, and the American Political Science Association’s best book award, among others. Of particular relevance to the current event, she is the lead author of Rising Risks to Global Value Chains for the GVC Development Report 2021. Solingen was the Spring 2022 Richard Holbrooke Fellow at the American Academy in Berlin.

Martin Thümmel has served in the Federal Foreign Office for over twenty years. He is currently deputy director general for East Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific. He formerly served as head of the Task Force European Migration Policy and as director of the political section at the German Embassy in Beijing. He has worked inter alia at the Permanent Mission of Germany at the United Nations in New York, the German Consulates General in Mumbai and Shanghai, as well as in the European Directorate of the Federal Foreign Office. He holds a doctorate in law and an M.A. in sinology.
