Richard C. Holbrooke Workshop Public Lecture

Shaping the Effects of Automation on Employment and Livelihoods in Germany: Policy Perspectives

The second annual Richard C. Holbrooke Workshop (“How Automation Will Affect the Future of Work in Germany”) will focus on the effects of automation on employment, incomes, and livelihoods in Germany. Automation driven by new digital technologies holds the promise of higher productivity and efficiency, but it also threatens to displace a large percentage of the workforce and to trigger changes in the skill, occupational, and sectoral composition of employment and in the level and distribution of wages. The workshop will bring together academic researchers from a variety of disciplines, labor and business representatives, and policymakers to discuss how digital technologies are affecting the German labor market.

On the first evening of the workshop, the Academy will host a public panel, “Shaping the Effects of Automation on Employment and Livelihoods in Germany: Policy Perspectives,” chaired by Laura Tyson and including Michael Schönstein, Head of Strategic Foresight and Analysis, German Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, and Monika Queisser, OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development).
