Becoming a White Man
“On March 16,2017, at the Chandler Hotel, I become a white man. I cross a line and I join a club that will define my reality going forward. I become a white man in 2017, in the year that white male bodies represent everything that is wrong with America. I become a white man as white supremacy and patriarchy become the official look and policy of the White House. I become a white man when #MeToo fills our social-media feed, and women finally break their silence. I transition publicly as the vitriol against transgender people becomes more overt, as an administration attempts to make transphobia official policy. I become a white man after having a successful twenty-year career in American theater perceived as a queer white woman. I become a white man as white men march in Charlottesville to assure America of their supremacy. I become a white man and feel the incredible love and joy of inhabiting the wholeness of my being.”
