Stephen Hinton is the Avalon Foundation Professor in the Humanities and Professor of Music at Stanford University. At the Academy, he is at work on his fourth single-authored book, “What Makes Music Classical?: Critical Perspectives,” which examines how “classical” music has evolved and been defined in relation to terms like “romantic,” “modern,” “popular,” and “vernacular.”
