Writer Heidi Julavits is an associate professor at Columbia University’s School of the Arts, a founder of “The Believer,” and author of a half dozen works of fiction and nonfiction. At the Academy, she’s working on a complex work of nonfiction called “Altitude Sickness,” the third in a trilogy in which she attempts to redefine memoir as an act of personal, philosophical, and ideological investigation.
