A Reading from Stimme und Atem. Out of Breath, Out of Mind
Academy alumnus Peter Wortsman reads from his new book, “Stimme und Atem. Out of Breath, Out of Mind.”
In this collection of stories—some of them quasi-autobiographical and nearly all written originally in German and then translated or adapted by the author into English—Peter Wortsman creates a compelling, if disturbing, portrait of himself and the contemporary age. Throughout, he harbors a hope: “Perhaps we Germans and Jews of the postwar generation, as children of a shattered cultural union, can still achieve something productive together; perhaps we can pick a few rags of reason from the ruins of the past and therewith pitch a tent big enough to hold all our dreams.”
