9/11 Twenty-Five Years Later: What We Have Learned, What We Still Need to Know
A discussion with Daniel Benjamin and Emily Haber on the tragedy of 9/11, twenty-five years on.
From September 11, 2001 to the US departure from Afghanistan on August 30, 2021, the Global War on Terror (GWOT) was the dominant fact in global affairs. Yet the full impact of the GWOT and the far-reaching effects it had on America’s state and society have barely been registered.
Academy president Daniel Benjamin served first as director for counterterrorism at the National Security Council during the pre-9/11 rise of al-Qaeda and then was the longest serving Ambassador-at-Large and Coordinator for Counterterrorism at the State Department in history. In this talk, he seeks to take the measure of the GWOT and to illuminate how the US failed to understand its enemy or the forces that campaign to destroy that enemy would unleash. He will further discuss these issues with Emily Haber, who held responsibility for counterterrorism during her tenure as State Secretary at the German Interior Ministry.

Daniel Benjamin is the president of the American Academy in Berlin. Prior to his Academy appointment, Benjamin was the Norman E. McCulloch Jr. Director of the John Sloan Dickey Center for International Understanding at Dartmouth College.
