Brian Ladd is an urban historian. His 1997 book The Ghosts of Berlin: Confronting German History in Urban Landscape received international attention. He is also the author of The Companion Guide to Berlin (2004) and Autophobia: Love and Hate in the Automotive Age (2008).

Project Description

Fractured History, Divided Identities: Berlin's Contested Space

Ladd spent two semesters at the Hans Arnhold Center, from September 1998 to May 1999. During his stay, he researched the topic “Fractured History, Divided Identities, and Berlin’s Contested Space.” He investigated the relationship between urban form and national identity, looking at the current debates regarding the reconstruction and reconnection of East and West Berlin as well as their roots in the divided city. The research resulted in several articles in scholarly journals and edited volumes.
