Capital - A Reading

In his Academy project, a book under contract with the University of Chicago Press, Postone rethinks the first volume of Marx’s Capital to recast its significance as a foundation of social theory with great relevance to the world today. A new encounter with Marx’s critical analysis of capitalism, he argues, illuminates how recent global transformations underscore the need for social theory to grasp questions of historical dynamics and large-scale structural change. While considering inadequacies of traditional Marxist approaches, Postone argues that Marx’s critical theory nevertheless exposes a unique, abstract form of domination rooted in a historically specific form of social interdependence. Rather than that form being the domination of a class or other social or political entity, Postone argues that it is the shifting temporal forces at the heart of social life in capitalist modernity.

Moishe Postone was a distinguished social theorist who had taught modern European intellectual history and critical social theory at the University of Chicago since 1987. He earned his Dr. Phil. summa cum laude in political science and sociology from the Universität Frankfurt. His extensive publications concern global transformation and critical theory, memory and identity in postwar Germany, and modern anti-Semitism.

Postone was the author of the widely translated Time, Labor, and Social Domination: A Reinterpretation of Marx’s Critical Theory (1993), which won the American Sociological Association’s prize in theory, and History and Heteronomy: Critical Essays (2009), and the co-editor of Catastrophe and Meaning: The Holocaust and the Twentieth Century (2003) and Bourdieu: Critical Perspectives (1993). His work was supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities, Chicago Humanities Institute, and the Center for Psychosocial Studies, among others.
