What Gets Amplified
Originally from Navajo Nation, Raven Chacon is a composer of chamber music, performer of experimental noise music, and installation artist. In this talk, he discusses his body of work, which explores the sounds of acoustic handmade instruments overdriven through electric systems, and the direct and indirect audio-feedback responses from their interactions. Chacon’s compositions are written for a variety of ensembles, musicians and non-musicians, and for social and educational situations. Together with the collective Postcommodity, he presented The Ears Between Worlds Are Always Speaking at 2017’s Documenta 14, in Athens. The installation uses repurposed Long Range Acoustic Device (LRAD) speakers to broadcast stories and songs of recent forced displacement and transformational journeys, told in a variety of languages by multiple speakers, during a time of one of the greatest mass migrations in history.
