The Future of United Nations Peacekeeping

United Nations Peacekeeping operations are one of the most successful tools the UN has used to maintain peace globally. Nevertheless, there have been no new missions in over a decade, and many missions are drawing down, despite an increase in civil conflict and political violence around the world. Why have peacekeeping missions been so successful, and why has the world stopped deploying them as a tool for conflict resolution? What reforms are necessary to ensure that peacekeeping can remain an instrument of global peace and security? In this talk, Sabrina Karim explores the wider political forces reshaping UN peace operations and considers what a future model of peacekeeping must look like to meet current geopolitical realities.
