The Future of European Security
A generation ago, Europe seemed to have transcended most traditional security issues. With few external military threats and durable transatlantic security guarantees, the continent continued to stroll down a path of peaceful integration and comprehensive debellicisation. Military budgets declined, armed forces shrank, and attention turned to other issues. In recent years and months, however, the situation has changed dramatically.
In this seminar, Gideon Rose addresses Moscow’s aggression, Beijing’s predatory mercantilism, and how Washington’s looming abandonment have thrust old-fashioned hard power back to the top of the European agenda. He will also analyse the reaction of shocked countries across the continent suddenly rethinking and rearming, and question how much has actually changed and how far will these new trends go.
