Novelist and spring 2026 fellow Maaza Mengiste speaks about the research involved in her two novels, Beneath the Lion’s Gaze and The Shadow King, and her current work in progress, A Brief Portrait of Small Deaths. Her discussion considers how her books, which span decades in history and cross continents, provided her with new insights about researching and writing history guided by photography, oral stories, and archives.
