Automobiles and the Convergence of Safety, Cybersecurity, and Privacy Risks

Consumer products ranging from kitchen appliances to automobiles are becoming smarter and more connected thanks to digitalization. As this occurs, risks historically treated as distinct—safety, cybersecurity, and privacy—are converging. In this talk, Andrew Grotto explains this convergence and describes the challenges it presents for global businesses, which are attempting to both manage digital risks and appease regulators in the development of their governance strategies for digital technologies. Without stronger international collaboration on regulatory harmonization and the resolution of safety, cybersecurity, and privacy, issues such as the “Huawei Problem” are primed to extend beyond telecommunications infrastructure into a growing array of products, including the increasingly computerized automobile.
