American Academy Lecture at DAI-Nürnberg
American Dystopia, American Utopia
Although the present day political moment in the United States is certainly dystopian, America has a long history of engaging with utopian ideals that guide many of its most admirable institutions, but have also been used to justify its worst practices. In this talk and reading, Alexandra Kleeman will discuss her previous novels, which deal with issues such as climate change, environmental toxicity, and overconsumption, as well as her novel-in-progress, which is focused on reimagining the utopian novel for decidedly imperfect times.
