Biography

Julie Mehretu is an internationally acclaimed artist whose paintings and drawings have appeared in numerous solo and group exhibitions at such venues as the Whitney Biennial; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; Sao Paolo Biennial; The Deutsche Guggenheim, Berlin; Busan Biennale, Korea; The eighth Baltic Triennial, Vilnius; Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; Redcat, Los Angeles; Wexner Center for the Arts, Columbus; The 15th Biennale of Sydney, Sydney; Hayward Gallery, London; Centre Pompidou, Paris; Mori Art Museum, Tokyo, The Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit; Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Humlebaek, Denmark; Kunstverein Hannover, Germany and the Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston. Mehretu is known for her large-scale paintings and drawings and her technique of layering different elements and media. With visual allusions to architectural plans, topographic maps, aerial photographs, modernist abstraction, and European history painting, Mehretu's works often suggest conflicts and congresses of space and time and globalization.
