Amity Shlaes is a senior columnist on political economy at the Financial Times. She writes twice weekly for the paper and its website from New York. She has a specialty in taxes. She formerly served as a member of the editorial board of the Wall Street Journal, where she wrote on economics, schools, and other things.  Miss Shlaes appears as a commentator on National Public Radio. She has been published in The New Republic, The National Review, and Foreign Affairs. Her book, The Greedy Hand: How Taxes Drive Americans Crazy and What to Do About It was published by Random House (1999) and Harvest (paperback). It was a US national bestseller. Her first book, Germany: The Empire Within (Farrar, Straus; Cape) looked at German national identity at the end of communism. As a JPMorgan Fellow at the American Academy in the Spring Semester of 2003, she is writing a history of the Great Depression for HarperCollins and Jonathan Cape (UK).
