The pool of alumni of the American Academy in Berlin encompasses great intellectual, creative, and geographic diversity. Since the Academy’s fellowship program began in 1998, over three hundred individuals have come to the Hans Arnhold Center from the US as Fellows or Distinguished Visitors, hailing from all fields of the humanities, arts and letters, political science, public policy, journalism, law, and the social sciences.

The American Academy in Berlin Alumni Association was founded in 2006–07 by former fellows interested in maintaining a connection with the Academy and each other, and in nurturing the American-German relationships created during their time at the Hans Arnhold Center. The Alumni Association is supported by the Academy’s leadership and Board of Trustees, who help to sponsor alumni events both in Germany and the US and who encourage communications about Academy alumni. The Academy’s Vice Chair and Alumni Committee Chair, Gahl Hodges Burt, has been an especially generous and steadfast supporter of Academy alumni.
