The Munich Security Conference Supplement

The 48th Munich Security Conference will take place at the Bayerische Hof in Munich from February 3rd to 5th, attracting a smattering of the world's top strategic defense thinkers and policy makers to discuss the most pressing topics confronting the defense policy world.

The 2012 conference will address the specific concerns of Germany's role in the maintenance of Europe-wide financial health and thereby its role in EU security policy; the global effects of national planning for energy, resources, and environmental sustainability; the future of the transatlantic relationship in light of the United State's stated shift towards a broader Pacific strategy; and the speeding rise of China and the broader Asian Pacific as global players. Joining the MSC panels this year are US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Secrertary of Defense Leon Panetta; German Defense Minister Thomas Maiziere and Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle; French Foreign Minister Alain Juppé; NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen; the International Executive Director of Greenpeace, Kumi Naidoo; US Senator John McCain; Singapore’s Minister of Defense, Ng Eng Heng; China’s Vice-Foreign Minister Zhang Zhijun; and Australia’s Foreign Minister, Kevin Rudd, among others.

The Süddeutsche Zeitung supplement, published in German on Thursday, February 2 and in English on February 3, covers topics addressed at the conference with articles by Heinrich August Winkler; Michael Ignatieff, Ramesh Thakur, David Shambaugh, Wang Yiwei, James A. Lewis, and Ashraf Swelam, among others, including Stefan Kornelius, the head of the foreign affairs desk at Süddeutsche Zeitung.
