Thematic Focus

As the Academy continues to refine how best to foster the German-American relationship in an increasingly complex and networked world, we are pleased to introduce a series of key themes as an additional focus to our programming. “Migration and Integration” is the initial theme, to be followed by “Race in Comparative Perspective” and “Exile and Return.” Each of these, explored over a three-year period, will address German and American responses to shared issues of global relevance, providing insight into concrete transatlantic dynamics. A grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation will support this thematic work.

Migration and Integration

The “Migration and Integration” theme informed our fall 2017 public programming, and has been integrated into the programming of the spring 2018 semester, including in a lecture by the president and CEO of the International Rescue Committee David Miliband, an expert panel discussion about integration in academia and the arts, in our Distinguished Visitors and fellow lectures, and will contribute our ongoing work with Berlin-based partners and institutions.
